Anjeer is a dry fruit, which belongs to the plum family. It is a variety of apricot and is also known as "Indian Apricot".

 

It is believed that Anjeer originated in southern Asia or northern India. In Sanskrit, this versatile fruit called as "anjir" means “the blissful”.

 

Anjeer is one of the most nutritious fruits available with high vitamin C and A content, calcium, phosphorus and iron. They have low sugar content when compared to other similar fruits like mangoes or bananas. The moistness in anjeers are retained due to its higher oil content content than other dried fruits. It also contains moderate amount of natural antioxidants as well as polyphenols.

 

The history of anjeers presence in India is not very clear but it is believed that it was known and consumed by the ancient Indians. It is believed that the monks used to use it as food because like many other fruits, the fruit is rich in healthy fats and good for brain function. It is also commonly used for medicinal purposes because of its strong antioxidant activity. The most common use of him was for perfumes, incense among many other ways. Its popularity declined during the Early Mughal period as a result of its relatively high cost compared to other dried fruits like dates or raisins.
