Bathroom Remodeling

No one enjoys a good remodel, but there's something particularly daunting about the prospect of overhauling your bathroom. For one thing, it's full of easily breakable objects like shampoo bottles and mirrors which are not fun to clean up afterwards. It's also the most frequented room in your home so even if you don't have kids around it'll need to be scrubbed every day. And then there are all those pipes and fixtures which can be tricky to get hold of and keep in place. For this reason we've compiled a list of bathroom remodel tips that you can use to reduce the stress and energy it takes to put your bathroom in tip-top condition before installing new flooring or fixtures.

- Refurbish and repaint the inside of your shower liner, ceiling, walls & tile before rennovating the outside. This will save you from looking like Tim Gunn at a garage sale or from having to re-stain or sand after your paint job has chipped away as a result of moisture damage. Use an encapsulated steam cleaner on all surfaces except mirrors & glass to remove surface dirt, dust & soap scum first.

- Clean, dry everything out of the tub & shower. Use strong air blowers on your tile shower stall to get the grime out and use a drop cloth to cover the water-sensitive paint and floor tile & remove all soap residue from them.

- If you're going to remodel an existing bathroom it's best to install new fixtures rather than renovate them. The moment you cut one of those pipes into, you'll have trouble keeping track of which piece relates to what part of the bathroom and it's really hard for your plumber and electrician to find all those angles where their pipes come into play if they want to pull a 3 or 4 pipe job out of a wall.

- Check with local plumbing codes regarding bathroom remodels; up to 24 hours notice is required in many areas.

- Use high quality finished materials that are guaranteed to last a long time. If you're going to be redoing an existing floor, ask the contractor whether it's one of the materials approved for use in your area. You're a lot better off with wood or tile than carpet and flooring because of the ease with which they need to be cleaned and maintained.
